A modern day warrior, mean mean stride, today's Tom Sawyer, mean, mean pride.

I'm still on a Rush kick, it would seem. I suspect I'll get over it eventually, but I'm in no hurry.

Plus, I saw the musical version of Tom Sawyer with Janice yesterday. It was....well, it was interesting. Not necessarily bad, but definitely kinda goofy at parts. However, I think whoever wrote the thing meant well, so I'll give 'em credit for that. It's chief downfall, I think, is that the author felt the need to have a song in every scene. So everytime the plot picked up a bit, a song would drag it down. And some of the songs were a tad unneccessary.

Still, I kinda liked it. And Jess, if you're reading, nice job. Your cheque is in the post.

What else.

Oh yeah, Tom and Rachel got married on Saturday. I'll backtrack to Thursday for the bachelor party. Tom's friend from school organized it all. We met at Dave and Buster's and proceeded to buy Tom some drinks and play a lot of silly games (always fun, of course). I bought Tom (and myself) a Hurricane, and it wasn't too bad. A bit much at first, but by the end, not all that bad. And, after having around 6 (VI) drinks, Tom seemed no different than usual. I think he put it something to the effect that since he was so outgoing in the first place, he had no inhibitions to lose anyways. I was only partially listening when he was explaining the logic (probably watching the baseball game).

Friday was the rehearsal dinner out in Montgomery City. It only took us a couple run-throughs to (more or less) get everything figured out. I think we ran through it twice mostly for the sake of the groomsmen. For some reason it took all our abilities to get lined up properly. Janice can attest to that. But we did get through it, which is most important. Then dinner, which was quite good, and a fun drive home.

Saturday was Wedding Day. I got to Tom's hotel around 11:30, and we had a grand 'ol time getting ourselves all spruced up (read: hot). Tom, that doyen of fashion, managed to try out a nose AND ear piercing all in a 5 minute span. Thankfully, and probably for Rachel's sake, he went sans piercing. We also spent some time in the largest rocking chair in Montgomery City, which, for some reason, I don't have a picture of. We got to the church around noon:30 or so for pictures with the professional and his Haasselblad. Anthony and I had to block Tom for a few minutes, lest he see Rachel while she was doing her pictures outside. So we stood around for awhile, looking hot (but not as hot as Tony Womack), got our pictures taken, and got ready for the wedding. It may come as no surprise that we groomspersons were going over our routine beforehand, lest we make ourselves look really goofy during the actual ceremony.

I'm happy to report that all went well. Not a single glitch anywhere.

The reception was a blast. I even managed to do some actual dancing. Well, I think it was dancing. I was moving around to music, but if it was any good is up for discussion. At one point, Tom cam up to me and said that if they played any Cowboy Mouth, I had to go out and dance, as I hadn't yet (I refuse to learn the Electric Slide, sorry). So, of course, not 5 minutes later, I hear 'Invincible,' and my fate is sealed. Apparently, some of Tom's Truman gang had grabbed their Mouth mix CD and taken it to the DJ. And I'm glad they did. For all the fuss I make about my (lack of) moves, I do enjoy myself out there. Later on, all the guys, still looking pretty hot, got up on the stage and busted a move or two to 'Legs.' Fun times. And, to cap off the evening, I caught the garter. Wild stuff.

The wedding will be...when I get around to it. I'll keep you all posted.

So I've been to 4 weddings over the past few years now, and I have two more next year. I've not necessarily felt the overwhelming urge to go and get married, as some people might, I suspect, but, after seeing Tom and Rachel on Saturday, I do know that it's something I want someday, when I'm ready (which, I know I'm not yet). I don't think either of them were without a smile for more than a minute or so Saturday, and I was like "yeah, this feels right."

So there you go.

I wish nothing but the best for those two.

Righto. Off to work I go.

Cheery bye,
Dave

All good things...

It's currently...8:17 a.m. on Monday, June 21.

I am now back at work after 10 wonderful days off. I'd like to have more time off, but any longer, and I may not have come back at all. So it was probably just long enough to recharge my cells.

Let's see...what did I do the last week and then some?

-went to Forest Park for ye olde Shakespeare/Juggling Jeff Festival
-saw Rush
-went to Aunt Diane's
-tortured some cats
-saw the Flecktones in Columbia
-finally got new contacts for my left eye (a big thing, really)
-got a haircut
-went to the baseball game
-had dinner at dad's

For being off, I sure kept pretty busy. And now I have to get psyched up for Tom's wedding this weekend. Crazy. I've been to weddings for a couple friends over the past two years, but this will be the first wedding for a close friend. Crap. We must be getting old or something.

Or more mature. Yeah, I like that better.

And in two or three weeks, I'll have been commander in chief of the house for a solid year. That's a scary thought. I haven't destroyed it, failed to pay a bill, or get evicted.

Yet.

It ain't easy, believe you me, but maybe, just maybe, I'm getting the hang of it.

And now, I'ma go back to work.

If I can remember how, that is.

YYZ,
Dave

A bullet-time mentality

In case you were wondering:

-The cats are showing no signs of residual trauma from their recent trip.
-The Flecktones are, of course, still amazing.
-Jake -insert long last name-, the ukelele player, is fantastic.
-Pamelia Kiersten is, at once, fascinating and extremely creepy when she's playing her
theramin.
-Never assume that a concert will start at 8:15.
-I got my left contacts traded in, and now I can use them again.
-Which means I can now actually wear sunglasses for the first time since...March.
-I looked at Chip when I got home from the eye doctor, and I swear she looked bigger.
-I got a bill from the gas company for $131, twice my normal cost. I must find out what
the deal is.
-Jehovah's Witness is (are?) getting sneaky. First they call, then they use a little
bit of slick talking to bring their info to your door.
-Of course, people are easier to talk around at 10 a.m. when they've been roused from
slumber.
-Soccer should not by played indoors when the air is thick enough to be sliced with a
knife.
-It does seem to invigorate our team, though: we tied, which is a huge step up from our
normal routine the past few weeks.
-Leah is upset with me because I beat Steve in chess. I suspect this will pass.

It's almost 12:30 o'clock. I need to call the gas company and hope they messed up. I hope you've enjoyed today's special "bullet-time post."

New background coming, I swear.

whoa.

La Villa Strangiato

Hello, friends.

"WHY CAN'T THEY MAKE INTERESTING MOVIES ANYMORE?"

Alex Lifeson, guitarist extraordinaire for the Canadian power trio Rush, said that at a recent concert.

He didn't say that at the show I attended on Saturday night, but it's okay. I actually couldn't understand what he said during his little rant, but that's okay. I could understand what Geddy was saying, and since he does lead vocals, that works out pretty well.

Did I mention it was a good show? If not, let me say it.

"It was a fantastic show. 31 songs, 3+ hours, and they played pretty much everything I could have asked for. It's amazing how much sound 3 guys can put out. And how well they all play. I mean, if I were putting together a band, my first choice for bass and drums would probably be Geddy and Neil. Neil wins hands-down over anyone, I think, and Geddy might just eke out a victory over Vic or Lord Adam Clayton. It'd be pretty damn close. And after 30 years, they don't seem to have lost much of anything. They sound better now than a lot of bands do in their prime. I really can't see any of today's bands being popular enough to play to a full house in 30 years. Hell, I can't see some of these bands being around in 5 (insert Nickelback joke here). So yeah, go Rush.

But why aren't they in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame?

In other news:

Congrats to mum and Mike on their (more or less) acquistion of a house.

Kudos to Aunt Diane for: a.) not killing me with her cooking, and b.) getting Chip in her cat carrier twice, and not suffering anywhere near as many injuries as I did trying to get her in that thing once.

I'd like to think I'm pretty...stiff upper lip when it comes to pain, but having a set of cat claws dig into my back put me over. Trying to get Chip into her carrier yesterday was an ordeal the likes of which I've not had in some time, and I'm not exaggerating. Granted, I was trying to put her in the wrong way most of the time, but still.

Ouch. Sweeny Todd is playing on my back, if you catch my drift.

All of this so I could get the cats to Aunt Di's house for to see the vet. Why drive 2 hours when there are lots of vets here in town?

Dr. Unal: $32 for shots
STL vets: $80 for shots

There you go. "Cat Trauma Weekend" has officially ended for this year. At least I'll know what to do when we do the shots thing next year.

I am now knee-deep in my vacation. It's pretty cool, and it reminds me how much I miss this sort of thing every summer. One of the pitfalls of working all the time. I took a walk around Auntie Di's place today, and realized, when I got back, that I hadn't thought about a single concrete thing. Generally, people take walks to think, but I took a walk and completely shut my higher brain off. How cool is that? I should do that more often.

I should take a week off more often, too.

From one concert to another: we're hitting the Flecktones tomorrow. Good times ahead. But for now, Ima go change my sheets.

They call me the workin' man, I guess that's what I am,*
Dave

*not this week!

Saturday, June 12

A certain amount of resistance to the forces of light and heat.

Greetings one and everyone,

I was going to apologize for the lack of updates lately, but I decided not to. Besides, George was looking at me like "why should you? you spent all your free time with me, so who cares about them?"

Can't argue with that.

Today is Sunday.

No, wait. It's Saturday, but it sure as hell feels like a Sunday, seeing as how I was off work yesterday. I may not care much for our current president, but I do enjoy getting days off. Yes, I know it was supposed to be a day of mourning, but shoot, I was just a pup when Reagan was in office, and by the time I got to the point where I could invest some interest in politics, he was long removed from the scene. So I'm pretty neutral to the guy. Now, I'm sorry he died, but that's about the best I can do. I'm also a bit weirded out at how every media outlet has been gushing out nothing but accolades for the guy. I'm sure he did some good things in office, and was, overall, a nice guy, but you'd think he was flawless while in office.

Just kinda weird. And way off where I was going with this post.

So yeah, I was off yesterday, and it was truly wonderful. I also find myself staring an entire week off right in the eyes. How will I ever make it? I'll have to force myself to see Rush. And the Flecktones. And HP3 at the Omnimax. And sleep in. It'll be rough, but I can do it!

Thursday night I went with Steve, Amy, and Janice to the ShakespeareFest Two-Thousand Fooooooouuuuuuuuurrrrrrrr! The play was pretty good, even if it took me 20-30 minutes to figure out what was going on. The musical insertions were a lot of fun, and I bet even the Bard himself would get a kick out of the rap and wacky dance scenes. Then there was that Jeff guy. Juggling Jeff. Have you seen him? No? Well go see him. Even if you don't stay for the show, you should go see him. If you can't make it there, let me know, and I'll get you a schedule of his appearances for the library's summer reading club. No excuses.

Janice, Jess, and Matt came over last night for a little bit of Manos to get us through the night. Nothing like Manos. I think it might have got a bigger reaction than UHF, although I'm not totally sure. We also watched some old Nickelodeon game shows, which was a hoot, and downed a lot of soda. Somehow or other, we wound up outside at around 11:00 or so, trying to hit whiffle balls in the dark. It must have been all the soda we drank. Good times were had by all, and no eyes were poked out.

I got a cigar from my guitar teacher on Wednesday to celebrate the birth of his first baby (a girl. Very cool and all, but I have no clue what I'm gonna do with the cigar.

I also need to go change and such not so I can go do a shoot and buy some groceries.

Then I can come home and go see me some Rush.

Dave

I think it's in everyone's best interst to visit here.

And have fun!

'fo drizzle, yo

It took me forever to come up with that subject, and I can't say I really like it all that much. But it is a subject, and I think I can live with it.

Anyways.

Remember me? I post here every once in awhile, too. I have no explanation for my recent slackingnessity, other than I'm a slacker. So there.

Obviously, my attempt to one-up Steve in the Big Words Fest Two Thousand-Foooooouuuur! failed. Miserably.

Let's see. Since my last post I've.....um...

Seen HP3. And loved it to death. New director? Excellent job, sir. I can't pronounce your name, but that's beside the point. SPFX team? For Buckbeak alone, you deserve at least a pat on the back. Maybe two. But then you have to figure in the dementors, and that just puts it over the top. I don't get creeped out by movies too often, but the first appearance they made managed to send a chill down my spine. Bravo. And it was wonderful to see an actual adaptation of the book, as opposed to a blow-by-blow filming if stuff happening. I could quibble a bit, but I shan't, because the good outweighs the bad by about 13 tons.

Garfield should be stopped.

I wound up with a glass of diet coke in my lap last night. It's an interesting experience.

I also decided I'd make a terribly Buddhist. The whole 'life is suffering' thing just doesn't work with my personality. Even when things are going cruddy, I can still find something to take a bit of joy in. So there. No dementors gonna be sucking out my soul.

I like how I tied Buddhism into HP. Go, me.

Yesterday was the kick-off for the 2004 SRC at SLCL. Lots of kids, animals, balloons, et cetera. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am--guaranteed cute. Makes my job so easy sometimes. I also got to see Zach and his mom yesterday. I hadn't seen them in almost a year, sinc my last week at JB. They used to come up for story time, and Zach, who's probably 5 now, would want to play on our computers (well, he'd try to at least). And I was his favorite person since I helped him get the games on the 'puter working. And he was just adorable. And his mom is extremely nice. I miss them.

Does this post have a herky-jerky feel to it? It seem like it does. Oh well.

I've got so much crap to pay for right now. Regular bills, dentists, charities, wedding gifts...sigh. Anyone want to make a donation?

Janice and I went down to mum's tonight for dinner. It was oodles of fun. Mike grilled up some mean brats (among other things) and no one died! Yay! We also perused her collection of pictures. So Janice got to see pictures of me from kindergarten and the like. Back when I was adorable.

I was going to go on some more, but I just noticed it's 12:30. Some of us need to get to bed...

And this post wasn't going anywheres anyways.

Vavoom, I'm gone!
Dave
